Swift Water Rescue Technician Unit 1™ (SRTU1)
SRTU1 is the first of three classes needed for personnel to meet the requirements for the Technician level under NFPA 1670 and NFPA 1006 standards.

This intensive three-day course (24-30 hours) contains one day of classroom followed by two days of practical field exercise. The initial emphasis of the course is on developing and practicing self-rescue skills. Other objectives include an in-depth look at water dynamics, hazards and obstacles, using basic rescue equipment, setting up technical ropes systems, controlling in-water contact rescues, and more. This is an essential course for anyone who may be required to perform a water rescue.

Students are provided with a course manual and skills sheet. Upon successful completion of course requirements and test, the student will receive a Swiftwater Rescue Technician Unit 1™ (SRTU1) certificate, identification card and patch.

Prerequisites:

• At least 18 years of age
• Adequate heath insurance coverage
• Basic swimming ability
• Signed liability release form
• Proper personal protective equipment
• Willingness to participate in hands-on activities
• Good physical condition

SWIFTWATER RESCUE TECHNICIAN ADVANCED™ (SRTA)
This course is the third class necessary for personnel wanting to meet the requirements for NFPA 1670 and NFPA 1006 standards at the Technician level. This course incorporates skills learned in SRTU1 and TRR:TL and moves beyond the previous emphasis on self-rescue to further concentrate on rescuing the victim.

This three-day course incorporates four to six hours of classroom instruction, followed by two and one-half days of practical field exercise, including a mock night river rescue scenario. The night scenario takes place at dark on the second or third evening and lasts until its successful conclusion.

Topics covered include preplanning; rescue and recovery management; flood specific problems; techniques for performing rescues in class IV-VI whitewater; raising/lowering systems; litter management; cliff picket anchors; "A" frames; tripod setups; night rescue; and much more.

• Completion of SRTU1 within past 3 years
• Completion of Rope Rescue Technician within past 3 years
• At least 18 years of age
